L’endurance è uno sport strano, difficile, particolare.

🇬🇧COSTA RICA’S ROCÍO ECHEVERRI McCANDLESS IS THE NEW FEI ENDURANCE DIRECTOR. WHO IS SHE, AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

First of all, we join the many federations and enthusiasts in congratulating the new FEI Endurance Director, Rocío Echeverri McCandless. One aspect of her background is being highlighted by everyone. She is “one of us”.

One of us because she is a rider who knows what it means to endure 160 km in the saddle, perhaps in the relentless rain of a World Championship in Normandy.

Yes, that very championship in Caen, where she represented her native Costa Rica at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 and completed a particularly demanding race, albeit in last place. Wearing bib number 48 and riding Jamin, she finished at an average speed of 14.38 km/h.

That championship also brings back a fascinating and, in some respects, historic memory. On the same course, in the same rain, a mother and her son were competing together. It may have been a first in endurance history, although we cannot say so with certainty.

We are talking about Simona Garatti and Daniele, who finished the World Championship together in 23rd and 24th place, riding Hanifa and Santa du Sauveterre. What an emotional moment.

FEI Endurance therefore welcomes a tough, experienced woman at its helm, with a strong background as a Technical Delegate, Judge and Steward. In these roles, she has officiated at international competitions across four continents, at the highest levels of the discipline.

Her experience also extends to other FEI disciplines, including Eventing and Dressage. She served as Chef d’Équipe of the Costa Rican Dressage team that won the bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2023.

Rocío Echeverri McCandless has also held several senior positions in sports governance at national, regional and international levels. She was President of the Costa Rican Equestrian Federation from 2016 to 2020, subsequently serving as its Secretary General until 2024. She was also a member of the Executive Board of the Costa Rican Olympic Committee from 2016 to 2024.

But what can we expect from her?

Certainly, an active presence and a close connection with the endurance community, but above all, attention to ensuring that the rules are respected. Endurance does not need more rules. There are already more than enough. It needs the existing ones to be respected and applied consistently to everyone.

Endurance is an unusual, demanding and distinctive sport. At the same World Championship, you can find a rider who owns just one horse, perhaps kept in a muddy field behind their home rather than at a yard, competing against the world’s wealthiest breeder, with two hundred top-level horses at their disposal. It hardly gets more unusual than that!

The former makes sacrifices, perhaps relying on an ordinary office worker’s salary, while the latter lives off their wealth. This gap raises questions about the future of the sport. Should endurance move towards greater professionalisation, both of the discipline itself and of those involved in it?

That is not for us to decide. For now, we extend our very best wishes to the new Director and hope to meet her soon and hear what she has to say.
